Good Day Outpost 1,
I am pleased to report only 6 signatures remain for Major John Haynes Sr. Presidential Medal of Freedom nomination paperwork. Eight Commanders/Presidents have already signed. Please keep an eye on your email because after each Commander/President signs it goes to the next in line automatically. There are quite a few events coming up this week.
If anyone has a digital Toys For Tots Flyer please send it my way
If the Commanders Coalition has helped your Veteran organization gain new members, we would be grateful if you would consider a donation or a paid subscription. With only limited funds remaining to carry us through the end of the year, your support directly sustains the work of Outpost 1 and the assistance we can continue to provide.
To those of you who are already paid subscribers—thank you. Your commitment keeps Commanders Coalition operating and enables us to serve more Veteran organizations. Every contribution, large or small, helps ensure we can keep doing so.
In your service,
Edward W. Hood
This past Monday, Oct 12, the Leon County Veterans Treatment Court worked with more than two dozen Veterans! Many still need a mentor, but are progressing or beginning to work on their recovery and treatment. Next Vet Ct session will be Monday, Oct 26 at 3pm, in the Leon County Courthouse, Courtroom 2E. Hope you can come observe, and may consider becoming a Veteran Mentor for one of the Vets working their way through the program. Several Veterans will be graduating next month on 11/23, same time and place, which is an inspiring day to come to Court! And mark your calendar for the November 23 Graduation Ceremony same time, same place.
This past Thursday,10 15 26, our clinic team of 15 Volunteers, including 5 attys, worked with 23 Veterans and family members at the American Legion Post 13. (Housing emergencies, VA hassles, domestic disputes, driver’s license barriers, etc.) And the new tabling partner, Comfort Keepers, was able to AGAIN offer timely assistance for Vets with intense family needs.
Kudos to Veterans Sam Adams, Eddie McMillian and Lavar Parker for the Quincy farmshare trip, delivering the truckandtrailer load of food to Vets around Leon County Wednesday. And to Susie Caplowe, Wayne Sprague and Cindy Myers for join us in hosting a Veterans’ room at the Saturday morning Pro Bono clinic at Nims Middle School (organized by the 2d Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee. (Oct 17)
One upcoming legal opportunity NOVEMBER 12 deserves your attention: ANY VETERAN WHO HAS NOT YET UPDATED THEIR VARIOUS “END OF LIFE” DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING WILLS, should plan to come to our legal clinic the day after Veterans Day, as we host SEVERAL OTHER local legal organizations (through the 2d Judicial Circuit’s Pro Bono Committee) who are joining us at the American Legion that Thursday for an expanded service- extra lawyers- so come take advantage of this chance for free legal help.
Redux: Expanded services by TVLC attorneys are available for handling VA cases for local Veterans. But the number of issues with the VA is outstripping our number of attys to keep up with the complications, new claims, and VA delays; so, any other attorneys wanting to join our “VA Law team,” we need you, and have training and national legal resources available to bring you into the fray. Were you a JAG? Have you helped with Social Security or other federal agencies that you already have a headstart on picking up VA law?
What else?
Thank you, Dan Hendrickson, for the Tallahassee Veterans Legal Collaborative www.Tallahasseeveteranslegal.com

Hello comrades, and friends of VFW Post 3308,
One of the hottest topics today is “Artificial Intelligence”. If you are like me, uncertainty is the first thing you feel when it’s mentioned. Now here is an opportunity to get clarification on this most fast-moving topic. Whether we understand it or not, it is going to influence our lives one way or the other so why not take a big step in understanding its ramifications.
With that said, here is an opportunity to know far more than probably 99% of folks know now.
Please, accept this invitation to hear about it and get those questions answered that you may not even know how to put into words at this point.
Place and date: VFW Post 3308 at 7:00 PM October 22nd.
Note: Persons who are not members of the VFW or Auxiliary may only purchase non-alcoholic beverages.
Sincerely,
Frank Roycraft

Vietnam War Hero of Dong Ha Bridge to be Awarded the Medal of Honor
A truly remarkable feat, Capt. John Ripley’s hand over hand journey across the Dong Ha Bridge to set explosives with no expectation of return is finally earned him the Medal of Honor on June 16, 2026. The honor will be posthumous as Ripley passed in 2008, but significant and meaningful to his family in more ways than one, as Ripley’s brother Tom, also a Vietnam veteran of three tours, passed on that day in 1971 while testing aircraft in America. The family’s deep connection to the Marines informs their appreciation of the honor and their praise and reverence for Capt. Ripley, who described his time on the Dong Ha Bridge as not “cluttered by the feeling that [I was] going to save [my] butt.” This selfless attitutde lives on in the Ripley family, who continue to serve.
